The Taiwanese semiconductor maker will delay production at its new chip plant in Arizona to 2025 due to a skilled labor shortage, the company’s chairman said in the company’s second-quarter earnings call Thursday.

apple It said it plans to use computer chips made at TSMC’s facilities in Arizona.

TSMC Chairman Mark Liu told analysts on an earnings call Thursday that the company does not have enough skilled workers to install advanced equipment at the facility on its initial schedule. The company previously predicted that it would start making 5nm chips in 2024.

Liu said the company is sending trained technicians from Taiwan to train local workers to help speed up the installation.

The United States has embarked on a major semiconductor re-manufacturing push alongside the United States, including by funding the multibillion-dollar Chip and Science Act to develop turbocharging. The pandemic has highlighted the US’s heavy reliance on countries like Taiwan to develop computer chips, which creates a national security risk and gives the US less control over the supply chain.
