BJP MP Poonam Mahajan is seeking to bring in a Lok Sabha member bill to replace the penal provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act with an increased penalty.

BJP MP Poonam Mahajan, known to be an animal lover, is seeking to introduce a Lok Sabha members’ bill to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960 and make it stricter.

“The law has failed to protect animals for more than decades now. Animal abusers have continued to take advantage of the old law and continue to inflict an unfathomable amount of cruelty on animals with impunity,” Mahajan said.

Parliament is expected to raise the rights of animals to the level of constitutional rights, as many countries around the world have done, in order to protect their dignity and honor. Thus, there is an urgent need to amend the penal provisions of the law in line with the ruling of the Supreme Court and to prevent unnecessary pain and suffering for animals and to ensure that the law is a deterrent to animal abusers.”

The bill seeks to replace the punitive provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 with aggravated punishment.

Mahajan, along with his daughter Avika Rao, often advocates for animal rights on social media, promoting the “adopt, don’t shop” policy.

She was the President of the Maharashtra State Animal Welfare Board from February 2016 to January 2020. During her tenure, she passed many crucial decisions on animal birth control centres, sterilization of stray dogs and protection of cows among others.
