A delegation from three political parties headed by Srinagar MP Farooq Abdullah met with Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha on Friday to highlight concerns regarding the health sector in J&K.

In a memorandum submitted to LG, National Conference, PDP and CPIM mentioned that the premier health facility in Kashmir – Sher Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) – is facing infrastructure and financing issues.

He stated that the institute, “which is experiencing practical difficulties,” the recent decision by the government to strip SKIMS of its autonomous status has adversely affected its decision-making process.”

It also highlights the recruitment deficit with “hundreds of vacancies at different levels” vacant. The delegation noted that recruitment had not taken place during the past seven years, citing a 50 percent shortage of all staff.

Sinha assured members of the delegation that the priority would be to address the “manpower issues at hand”.
