A 29-year-old man, hailing from Andhra Pradesh, has been booked at Bangalore International Airport after he allegedly attempted to open the left rear emergency door of Air France Flight 194 mid-air. Police said the passenger, identified as Venkat Mohith Achari, was suffering from a mental condition and the incident occurred on July 15 around 8pm on a Paris-Bengaluru flight.
Citing a complaint filed by the airline’s management, Indian Express It reported that Achari was traveling alone and allegedly tried to open the plane’s emergency door lever. The complaint was filed at the airport police station based on a report submitted to the department by the flight crew who witnessed the accident.
He was booked under Section 336 (Penalty of imprisonment for reckless or negligent act endangering human life or personal safety of others) and under Section 29 of the Aircraft Rules, 1937 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
He was traveling to Bengaluru for medical treatment at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS). The report quoted a police officer as saying, “The accused was not drunk. He has a mental condition and that is why he tried to open the emergency door lever. It was reported that all the passengers on the plane are safe.”
This isn’t the first time a passenger on a plane has acted unruly on a flight. A few days ago, a 40-year-old passenger, Furkun Hussain, allegedly opened the emergency exit door flap on an IndiGo flight during takeoff. Citing Delhi airport sources, NDTV reports that the accident occurred on July 8 on board Flight 6E 5605 Hyderabad to Delhi and was handed over to CISF after landing at Delhi airport.
