Condemning violence during the recently concluded panchayat elections in West Bengal, who supported Trinamool Congress President Mamata Banerjee during her anti-land grab movement against the left front government over Nandigram and Singhor, filmmaker Aparna Sen said Thursday that “none of us want this change”.

“Change was needed (at that time). What the left-wing government was doing at that time was very unfair. The idiots from the left-wing parties didn’t allow people to vote. We didn’t forget it. But we didn’t want that either,” Sen told the media workers. On the sidelines of an event organized by the human rights organisation, Association for the Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR), at the Mahabodhi Community Hall in Kolkata.

At the event, which was attended by dignitaries like educator Miratun Nahar, an open letter written to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was also read.

“In the last 37 days, 52 people lost their lives due to the Pancasi polls. Many people are missing. In your capacity as prime minister and minister of the interior in the Western Bengal state, CM Mamata Bnerjee cannot deny this responsibility in any way. Without denying the constitutional responsibility of the election committee, it can be said that the responsibility of the current chaos is mainly the Western government The letter said that the central forces and the election committee must rely on the local administration.

“Let the government elected by the people take responsibility for protecting people’s lives, livelihoods and property by immediately introducing a neutral administrative system in blood-soaked West Bengal,” she said.

Human rights activists Bolan Gangopadhyay and painter Sameer Aish were among the other signatories of the letter.

Later in the event, Aparna Sen attacked other political parties, calling them corrupt.

There is no democracy left in this country. After a few days, it may no longer be possible to speak in this way. I am talking about all political parties including the ruling party in our country. And those who are not corrupt, do not win any seats.”

When asked about her relationship with Trinamool, Sen said, “I never met Mamata Banerjee in person. Because I didn’t want to be associated with a political party. I wanted a change. I got votes, so I became Chief Minister. I went to Nandan Film Festival. Nandan is made of tax money We have. But as Prime Minister, we should be able to seek justice from her.”

Responding to Sen’s remarks, MP Shantanu Sen of the Transitional Military Council, Rajya Sabha said, “Aparna Devi should remember that there was no less violence in elections during the left front era. But since Trinamool is tolerant and does not pursue a policy of revenge, even after 12 years in power, more Trinamool workers have died in the polls.”

BJP National Vice President Dilip Ghosh also took a jab at the senator. It condemns all political parties. Is everyone good at the film industry? Not everyone is bad at politics either.
