The Goa Legislative Assembly on Friday passed a resolution asking the central government to crack down on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for “tarnishing India’s image internationally” by “distorting events” in its documentary “India: The Modi Question”.

Goa CM Pramod Sawant said, “Goa Legislative Assembly passed a resolution by a majority (a) condemning BBC’s act of defaming the nation by releasing a documentary based on lies against the democratically elected leader of India.”

The move followed a decision by members of the Bharatiya Janata Party MLA, Krishna Salkar, who asked the House of Representatives to pass a resolution asking the central government to crack down on “strange findings shown in a BBC documentary”.

The resolution stated that the documentary “holds the then Chief Minister directly responsible for these unfortunate events in Gujarat, which stands in stark contrast to the ‘chit clean’ issued by the state government’s Nanavati Commission on the Godhra massacre and subsequent communal riots”. Opposition parties opposed the decision, stating that the matter is subject to the judiciary and should not be discussed in the House of Representatives.
