Mumbai recorded the heaviest rain of the season in a 24-hour period on Saturday morning with data from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) showing the figure exceeding 200mm during the period between 8.30am on Friday and 8.20am on Saturday.

According to official IMD figures, 203.7 mm of rain was recorded at the Santacruz Observatory, while the coastal observatory at Colaba recorded 103 mm.

So far, the highest single-day rainfall this season was recorded on June 25 at 176.1 mm, followed by 121.6 mm on June 29. The second highest rainfall this month was on July 18 at 119.9 mm.

Sushma Nair, a scientist at IMD Mumbai, said, “Until the end of this weekend, bouts of moderate to heavy rain are expected in Mumbai due to the presence of low pressure, coupled with a cyclonic circulation that has developed over southern Chhattisgarh which will intensify the rain condition in Mumbai and adjoining areas.”

Mumbai has also passed the 1000mm rainfall mark in July in just three weeks as the total rainfall recorded in the city between July 1st and July 22nd is now 1141.8mm.

Over the past 24 hours, all primary pockets of Mumbai recorded rainfall in triple digits, with Andrei East (MAROL) recording 215mm, followed by 200mm at Vikruli, 186mm at Vidyavihar, 180mm, 150m. 127mm in Ram Mandir, 110mm in Mulund, 106mm in CSMT and 103mm in Colaba.

IMD officials confirmed that periods of heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue to hit Mumbai throughout the day.

In its five-day forecast released on Friday (July 21), IMD has issued an “orange” alert for Mumbai through Saturday, indicating heavy to very heavy rain. The alert may be extended later today if heavy rains continue to batter Mumbai.

Meanwhile, the city’s water stock on Saturday morning was 47.54 percent, which saw an increase of 5 percent over the past 24 hours. The civic authority data showed that the watersheds of several lakes received rain above 100 mm in the past 24 hours, which included 163 mm in Tulsi Lake, 146 mm in Vihar Lake, 134 mm in Modak Sagar, 101 mm in Tansa Lake, 93 mm in Bhatsa Lake, 60 mm in Upper Vitarna and 39 mm in Middle Vitarna.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Automatic Weather System (AWS) also showed 82.89 mm of average rainfall in the island city, 148.4 mm in the eastern suburbs and 122.3 mm in the western suburbs.
