The Gujarat Congress on Saturday declared its support for the banda which was called on Sunday by tribal leaders in the state’s tribal areas to protest against the atrocities suffered by women from the Koki-zumi community in Manipur.

“Adivasi organizations have asked for the support of the Congress for the Bandh and we have decided to give them the support. The BJP government is responsible for the situation that has arisen in Manipur,” party spokesman Manish Doshi said in a statement.

The call comes after videos of two women from the Kuki-Zomi community in Manipur being sexually assaulted in public went viral on social media.

The congress support comes a day after the state AAP called for an assembly in 14 tribal areas of Gujarat on Sunday. AAP working chief Chaitar Vasava called for Bandh on Friday, demanding Manipur Governor Anusuya Oyeke to resign.

“We appeal to people from all communities and parties to support Bandh, which is to educate the government and draw its attention towards Manipur,” he added in a video statement on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Doshi said, “We have conveyed to all cadres of our party to observe Bandh to protest the heinous act of violence against tribal women in Manipur. This band will be effective in the entire tribal belt, from Ambaji in the north to Amrajan in the south.”

He added that “social tribal groups in Gujarat requested the support of Congress for this band.”
