Dreams of buying land in Alibaug landed with the help of a 29-year-old housekeeper who was recently arrested by Malabar Hill Police for allegedly stealing gold and diamond jewelery worth at least Rs 60 from the flat of a 75-year-old businesswoman who is in jail.

Police said Seven help work at the businesswoman’s home, where the accused worked as a spokeswoman, and allegedly stole valuables over time, stealing small amounts each time to avoid suspicion. The businesswoman and her husband are staying at Chandralok’s apartment in Malabar Hill. Former Prime Minister Ashok Chavan also owns a home there. The couple, who have sugar mills abroad, had earlier resided in the US and had recently moved to a Malabar Hill house due to their advanced age.

Police said the couple hired the accused, Laxmi Swale, in December 2022.
“They had a full-time caretaker, but since the caretaker also needed to visit her hometown from time to time, the couple wanted someone else in her absence,” said a police officer.

In December 2022, when her full-time caretaker left for her native Nepal, the 75-year-old woman called an agency that sent Laxmi home. I worked for a month and left. She came back in March but left again after working for a month,” the officer added.
During her second shift, the police said that the accused stole gold and diamond jewelry from her home. The robbery appeared on July 8th.

The first clue came from a missing necklace. Police said the 75-year-old woman was wearing the necklace in March. “She only wore the necklace once that month. But on July 8, she had to attend a function for which she asked Laxmi to bring the necklace from her locker,” the officer said. After Laxmi said she could not be found, the woman, after consulting other family members, reported the matter to the police on 11 July. Initially, the police said, the complainant did not suspect Laxmi. During the investigation, the police began questioning the current and former house assistants at their home. When she was suspected, Laxmi was brought to the police station and during interrogation, she confessed to the crime.

“At the time of FIR registration, we were told that valuables worth Rs 6.5 lakh were stolen. However, we have recovered much more jewelry than was reported missing and the estimated cost is more than Rs 60 lakh,” said an officer. Police further said that the woman, who is staying with her husband and son in Deva in Thane, decided to steal because she wanted to buy land in Alibag. He added, “She wanted to buy a house, and she needed the money to fund her children’s education.”
