On tip-off, the man was intercepted at Kolkata airport last week after arriving from Singapore, and his expensive Grubel Forsey watch was not declared before it was seized by customs authorities, according to a statement from the CIA here.

The Mumbai district unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has confiscated smuggled luxury watches worth more than Rs 30 crore from the home of a Kolkata resident, officials said on Saturday.

On tip-off, the man was intercepted at Kolkata airport last week after arriving from Singapore, and his expensive Grubel Forsey watch was not declared before customs authorities confiscated it, according to a statement from the CIA here.

It added that while the man was arrested under the Customs Act, officers from the Internal Intelligence Service, Mumbai district unit searched his home located in an upscale apartment complex in Kolkata.

The statement added that up to 34 watches were recovered from premium foreign brands including Greubel Forsey, Purnell, Louis Vuitton, MB, F, Mad, Rolex, Audemars Piguet and Richard Mille.

It said most of these watches were limited editions with a total market value of more than Rs 30 crore.

The import of watches by individuals via baggage attracts 38.5 percent of customs duties.

The statement said further investigation was underway.
