A moving goods train hits them, instantly killing one lion and seriously injuring another

A devastating accident occurred in Rajula Taluka of Amreli district of Gujarat state, where a freight train collided with an Asian lion pride in the early hours of Friday morning. The accident resulted in the death of one lion and the serious injury of another lion. Fortunately, two lionesses managed to escape unharmed and crossed the railway track before being hit by a train.

According to forest officials, the accident occurred while four lions, including two semi-adult lions aged three to four years and two adult female lions, were crossing the railroad track. A moving goods train hits them, instantly killing one lion and seriously injuring another. The injured lion received immediate medical attention at a nearby rescue center and was later transported to Scarbaug Zoo in Junagadh for further treatment.

Aradhana Sahu, Chief Forest Conservation Officer (Wildlife Department), Junagadh said, “The accident occurred during the early hours of Friday when the four lions were crossing the railway track and were hit by a train. Unfortunately one lion lost his life and another was seriously injured.”

The incident follows a similar case in September 2022 when a lion cub lost its life after being hit by a passenger train on the same railway line in Amreli district.

Moreover, in 2022, the Gujarat government revealed in the state legislative assembly that 283 lions, lionesses and lion cubs died in the two years to December 2021. Tragically, 29 of these deaths were attributed to unnatural causes.

Notably, according to the 2022 population estimate, there were a total of 674 Asiatic lions residing in and around the Gir Wildlife Sanctuary.
