Karan Johar, who made his directorial debut in 1998 with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, is currently awaiting the release of his next film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. While promoting his latest movie, Karan He talked about KKHH and admitted that he made a mistake about the gender politics of his first movie. He also explained how he has developed as a filmmaker over the years.
At a recent IIMUN event, Karan criticized his debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and said that it “promoted wrong gender politics”. He said, “I feel like I’ve grown as an individual. The first film I made, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I firmly believe that the gender politics of this film were all wrong. It spreads the wrong gender politics, and there are a lot of surfaces in this film. Of course, there is nostalgia so you love it, but you don’t scratch the surface of the film and see that what Rahul is actually doing is not what I want all the Rahul in the audience to do, or all the boys in general.”
Ranveer Singh, the lead actor in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, playfully interrupted Karan during the interview, and said, “I woke up in the middle of nowhere, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (The movie will not run in the waking period).”
Responding to Ranveer’s comment, Karan clarified that the issue is not just about “waking up” but rather about character representation in cinema. ‘No, it’s not about getting up. It’s about the dynamic that we project in cinema and the movie is a strong representation of how that translates to faith today. Rahul was saying all kinds of wrong things.’ He said, ‘Home Ike Bar Pyaar Kart High (We fall in love once), ‘but he fell in love twice. He said,’We got married once (We got married once) “He got married twice. He contradicts himself throughout the movie.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai revolves around the love triangle between Anjali (Kajol), Tina (Rani Mukerji) and Rahul (Shahrukh Khan). The story follows their college years, during which Anjali falls in love with her best friend Rahul, who in turn falls in love with Tina, a new student.
