In a major move to construct the proposed 3.8km tunnel between Orange Gate and Marine Drive, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has emerged as the lowest bidder for the construction of the project at Rs.7,765 crore.

Mumbai Metropolitan Area Development Authority is the nodal agency for the construction of the project that will link the Eastern Expressway with the upcoming coastal road.

The proposed 3.8 km double tunnel road will provide a connection between the Orange Gate, Eastern Expressway and Marine Drive on the Mumbai Coastal Road. Each tunnel will have two +2 lanes with one emergency lane. Financial bids for the project opened on July 20 with MMRDA expecting the project to cost Rs 6,000 crore. The last two bidders, which include L&T and J Kumar Infraprojects, priced at Rs.7,765 crore and Rs.8,589 crore respectively.

“Now the bid approval committee led by the state government will decide on the appointment of the contractor and only then can the LOI be issued,” said the MMRDA official.

Once constructed, it will be the third longest land tunnel in Mumbai. There is currently a 1km tunnel, part of the Eastern Highway, and a 2.7km tunnel, which is part of the Coastal Road project.
