The Manipuri Diaspora League, Pune (Amand) in coordination with Mette Nobi Loeb (MNL) and Amand Ladies Club (ALC) on Friday condemned the Manipur incident in which two naked women were paraded and sexually assaulted – a video clip emerged two days earlier.

At a press conference, Nirmala Salaam, executive member of AMAND, said that they condemned this “inhumane act” against the women of Koki community in Manipur and added that severe punitive measures should be imposed on the perpetrators. Colabidu Chanam, Chairperson of AMAND, said the violence had severely affected all communities and students in Manipur, and urged the government to ensure steps are taken to restore normal life in the state as soon as possible. The organizers appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the help of the country’s citizens. There are thousands whose homes were burned down and they are now homeless. Please help us.”

In a separate protest, the New Socialist Alternative and Yuvac Kranti Dal gathered in Good Luck Square to demand justice for women. Yuvak Kranti Dal member Anwar Rajan said, “This brutal video of May 4 and the Home Minister visited Manipur after this incident, how could he not notice it? This government has failed to protect the rights of the people of Manipur, and it should resign.”

Alka Joshi, a social activist from the Lokiat group, held the authorities responsible for the incident and demanded the president’s rule in Manipur.
