They said the body of the 18-year-old, who was married on June 13, was found in the bathroom of her home in Katkmadag Police District on Friday.

Police said on Saturday that a newly married woman was found dead in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand state along with her family claiming that her in-laws had killed her over dowry.

Police said they arrested her husband, but that his two brothers and sister-in-law who allegedly brutalized her escaped.

In the police complaint, the victim’s father alleged that she was repeatedly tortured by her in-laws.

Police said the woman was allegedly killed by her husband and other members of his family, and the body was hung in the bathroom to make it look like a suicide.

DK Prajapati, the officer in charge of Katkamdagh Police Station, said the body has been sent for an autopsy.

He said an investigation is underway.
