In an effort to eliminate spam and bots, Twitter imposes daily limits on the number of direct messages unverified accounts can send. The platform said the changes will take effect on Friday and affect users who do not have a verified badge or Twitter Blue subscription.
The company didn’t reveal what exactly the DM limit would be, but suggested that users who want to send unlimited direct messages will have to subscribe to Twitter Blue, its paid service that costs 900 rupees per month in India and offers various features and perks.
This is the latest move by Twitter owner Elon Musk, who acquired the platform in 2022 after a fierce bidding war, to address, among other things, the spam and bot issue that has plagued Twitter for years. Musk famously declared that he would “beat spam bots or die trying!”
We’ll soon be implementing some changes in our efforts to reduce Direct Messages spam. Unverified accounts will have a daily limit on the number of direct messages they can send. Subscribe today to send more messages:

Last week, Twitter introduced a new DM setting where messages from users you follow will go to your primary inbox, and messages from verified users you don’t follow will go to your message requests inbox. Earlier, the company introduced rate caps – temporary limits on the number of tweets users can view each day. This was announced after what appeared to be a service outage affecting users all over the world.
Twitter said the new DM limits and settings are meant to “reduce spam in direct messages” but people are already accusing the company of using DMs as a way to force users to pay for Twitter Blue.
