The Utah Police Operations Cell arrested two men it alleged were linked to the Lawrence Pishnoe mob and were running a racketeering operation in Tricity.
Police have identified the arrested suspects as Ravi Kumar, 34, from Bannur village in Mohali, and Sumdut, 34, a resident of Maluya Colony in Chandigarh. Police said Ravi Kumar is the cousin of gangster Deepu Banwar, who is currently imprisoned in Patiala jail and is a member of Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
Two domestic handguns, seven live ammunition and a two-wheeled bicycle were recovered from the accused’s possession.
According to the police, both Ravi Kumar and Sumdutt were extorting money on the orders of Deepu Banwar, in order to strengthen Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang. Police said Ravi Kumar and Sumdot extorted around 40-45 lakh rupees from some businessmen based in Tricity in the past six months. Police have so far been able to trace transactions of around Rs 25-30 to the duo, of which Rs 1.57 lakhs have been recovered.
(Operations) Mridul said, “The accused, Ravi Kumar and Sumdutt, were arrested on July 19. Since then, they are in police custody. Names of several gangsters came to the fore during their interrogation. Deepu Panwar, on request of Lawrence Bishnoi, was threatening businessmen through coded calls from inside Patiala jail. Two of the accused used to collect extortion money on behalf of Panwar.”
Inspector Harinder Singh Sekhon said, “After making threatening calls, Deepu Banur directed Ravi to go collect money from businessmen in Tricity. After collecting the extortion money, it was further injected into the nexus between lending, gambling and drugs in Tricity. According to the information, it was found that in the last six months, as directed by Deepu Banur, Ravi had collected around 40-45 lakh rupees. From this, the police were able to track down 25- 30 lakh rupees.”
