Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) Fri Arrested ASI Satnam Singh of Tibba Police Station in Ludhiana and his assistant Balbir Singh for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a widow.

A VB spokesperson said that ASI was caught red-handed while accepting bribes from the complainant Daljit Kaur, a resident of Ram Nagar in Ludhiana, through private person Balbir Dhillon, to settle a complaint lodged against her.

Police said the woman’s sister-in-law filed a complaint against her for selling the ancestral property without their consent. The investigation of the matter was assigned to ASI Satam Singh. The ASI was threatening the woman that he would file an FIR against her.

He allegedly demanded Rs 1.40 lakh for not filing an FIR against her. However, later he agrees to give a clean chit to the woman if she gives 60 lakh rupees. The complaint alleged that she had already paid Rs 3,000 to him on 18 July.

On Friday, Balbir Singh had called the woman to his house in Jagdishpura and informed her of the money as the ASI was already there. The Vigilance Bureau set a trap and arrested the two men.

A case has been registered under Section 7, 7a of the Prevention of Corruption Act and 120-b of the IPC against both the accused at VB Police Station, Ludhiana Range.
