Pakistani citizen Seema Haider garnered national attention for her controversial love story when she crossed the border to enter India after falling in love with her Indian boyfriend, whom she met in an online game.
However, Haider has remained in the headlines as she faces an investigation by the security services over allegations of espionage and her renewed efforts to remain in India.
She is now out of custody after the anti-terrorism agency investigation and confirms that she is not a spy and wants to stay in India. As the case takes many twists, here is Seema Haider’s story so far:
Who is Seema Haider?
Seema Haider, 30, who hails from Pakistan’s Sindh province, crossed into India illegally in May to be with her partner Sachin Mea in Greater Noida.
Seema, a mother of four, was married to Ghulam Haider, who is currently residing in Saudi Arabia. She left her home country and crossed the border into India illegally with her four children, all under the age of seven, on a bus through Nepal on May 13.
Haider said she came to live with his Indian lover, Sachin Meena, who resides in Rabopura district of Greater Noida.
Seema, left her home and husband to Sachin, says she wants to spend her whole life with Sachin and doesn’t want to go back to Pakistan.
However, she was arrested on 4 July for illegally entering India without a visa via Nepal while Sachin was put behind bars for harboring illegal immigrants.
What did Sima Haider do?
Seema’s love story with her partner Sachin Meena started in 2019 in the private chat room of the online game playing PUBG. They made friends with PubG and then started chatting on WhatsApp and later decided to get married.
According to reports, the couple decided to take their relationship to the next level and got married at the Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal in March this year. The couple first met in person in March this year in Kathmandu where they stayed together at a hotel in the Nepalese capital from March 10-17.
Seema returned to Nepal from Pakistan, taking the road between Karachi and Dubai, on a 15-day tourist visa on May 10. And in Nepal, I got from Kathmandu to Pokhara and stayed overnight. Seema then took a bus from Pokhara on the morning of May 12 and entered India from the Siddharthnagar border district of Ruupandhi Khonwa (Khunwa).
She traveled with her four children to Greater Noida via Lucknow and Agra and has been staying with her lover ever since.
How did the dispute start?
Seema Haider, her husband Sachin and Sachin’s father were arrested by the Gautambuddha Nagar Police in Balabgarh, Haryana state and the three were sent to judicial custody for 14 days.
However, the three were granted bail by a local court on 7 July and she began living with her four children in a house in Rabopura district.
Earlier on Monday, Seema Haider, her husband Sachin and Sachin’s father Netrapal Singh were questioned by the Uttar Pradesh Police’s Anti-Terrorism Squad for two days.
According to intelligence, two videotapes, four mobile phones, five “authorized” Pakistani passports, an “unused passport” with an incomplete name and address, and an identity card were received from Seema Haider.
What is the police investigation?
Seema was questioned by the ATS about her relatives and the allegations of her brother and uncle serving in the Pakistan Army. She was able to read an English text handed to her by the police perfectly, according to reports.
Reports said Haider was also questioned by UP ATS officials about her proficiency in Hindi, as she could be heard using difficult Hindi words while giving TV interviews.
Haider told officials that she learned Hindi while playing with Indians on PubG. However, when faced with the fact that her boyfriend did not use such tough Hindi phrases, Haider kept silent.
The UP ATS recommended that Seema be sent back to Pakistan, but claimed that she would be killed if she returned to her country.
However, UP’s Director General of Police, Prashant Kumar, said it would not be appropriate to say whether Seema was a spy “unless we have sufficient evidence”.
Asked if Seema could be a spy for Pakistan, the DGP Special confirmed that nothing could be said ahead of time. “The issue concerns two countries. Until we have enough evidence, it would not be appropriate to say anything in this regard.”
What did Sima Haider say so far?
After being arrested for the first time earlier this month, Seema pleaded with Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath to allow her to stay in India. She said she would be “stone to death” in Pakistan if she returned.
Reportedly, the Pakistani national filed a petition before President Derbadi Mormo requesting Indian citizenship. In her petition, she claims to have been deeply influenced by Indian culture and traditions and has requested permission to remain in India.
Seema reiterates that she does not wish to go back to Pakistan and wants to live with Sachin. She also claimed to have converted to Hinduism.
