ATHENS (Reuters) – Officials on the Greek island of Rhodes said on Saturday they have moved 30,000 people threatened by wildfires to safety, including 2,000 who had to be removed from beaches.
The tourists and some local residents were taken to gyms, schools and hotel conference centers on the island where they will stay overnight, while firefighters battle the blaze, according to Agence France-Presse.
George Hadjimarkos, regional governor of the southern Aegean, told Skai TV that the operation, which is still ongoing, has been hampered by fires that have cut off some connecting roads.
A Rhodes municipality official said dozens of buses were used by coast guards, the armed forces and local authority workers to help remove people from the fires.
