The shooting took place in the village of Nyakova, on the shores of Lake Albert, in the Ituri province of eastern Congo.
“The soldier shot everyone around him. Ten people were killed,” Ituri army spokesman Jules Ngongo said by telephone.
He said search teams are searching for the soldier, a member of the Congolese Navy, and an investigation has been launched into the incident.
Village chief Oscar Baraka Mogoa said 13 people were killed, including nine children.
It was not clear what prompted the soldier to start shooting. According to Mogoa, the soldier was worried that his child would be buried there without him.
