Samajwadi Party MLA Irfan Solanki and six others, including his younger brother Rizwan Solanki, were charged under the Uttar Pradesh gang and anti-social activities (prevention) laws in the Kanpur court on Friday, police said on Saturday. The court will consider the matter at a hearing on August 3.

“On Friday, Irfan Solanki and six others, including Rizwan Solanki, were filed under UP Gangsters’ Act. Police charged them with creating terror in public and threatening to form a gang. In the charge sheet, there is mention of four cases (earlier filed against the accused) to invoke UP Gangsters Act against the accused,” said Kanpur government advisor, Bhaskar Mishra.

Four times Legal Aid Act of Kanpur Sisamaw seat Irfan Solanki has been booked in eight cases in the last nine months and has been charged in all cases. Irfan Solanki is currently imprisoned in Maharajang Jail since his arrest last December.

According to the police, the trial in one of the cases is expected to end by next month. Police claimed to have seized the accused’s property worth around Rs 100 crore while investigating the current case.

Last November, Irrfan Solanki and four others, including Rizwan, were booked on arson and other charges at Jagmao Police Station in Kanpur. They were booked for allegedly harassing a woman and setting her house on fire in an attempt to take her land in a posh city area.

Since then, police said, Irfan has been booked in seven more cases at various police stations in Kanpur. A total of five cases, including the ‘UP Gang Law’ case, were registered at Jagmao Police Station, two at Jawal Toli and one at Mulganj Police Stations.

Kanpur Police Commissioner BB Jogdand confirmed that eight cases had been registered against Irfan Solanki in the last nine months. “Investigations have been completed in almost all cases. In most cases, indictments have been filed. The case has reached the final stage,” said a senior police officer working in Kanpur.

Under the UP Gangsters’ Act, Irrfan Solanki has been booked along with four others, including Rizwan, but the police have added the names of two more people during the investigation.

“In the charge sheet, the police stated that they have confiscated the property of the accused worth around Rs 100 crores, as of now. The maximum amount of property confiscated belongs to Irfan Solanki. Efforts are underway to trace their other properties bought with money earned through criminal activities,” Mishra added.

Mishra added that the police have also attached the criminal history of Irfan Solanki, with a total of 18 cases filed against him.

On Friday, Mishra said, Irfan Solanki joined the trial through video conferencing, while six other defendants were brought to court from Kanpur district jail.

“The court took note of the indictment and fixed August 3 as the next date for the hearing. The arson case against Irfan and others has reached the final stage and the verdict is expected next month. The questioning of the investigating officer in the case is ongoing,” Mishra added.
