Responding to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athowali said that nine such deaths were recorded in 2023.

As many as 339 people have died while cleaning sewers and septic tanks in India in the past five years, according to government data. Manual waste collection is a prohibited practice under the Prohibition of Employment of Manual Migrators and Rehabilitation Act (PEMSR) 2013. The Act prohibits the use of any individual to manually clean, carry, dispose of, or otherwise handle human excrement until disposal.
