Former Barcelona midfielder Arturo Vidal has launched an attack on PSG fans over their treatment of Lionel Messi.
Messi hit the headlines after his visit to Saudi Arabia, hours after Les Parisiens lost in Ligue 1 to Lorient on Sunday (April 30). He flew in from Paris despite being required to show up for training on Monday (1 May).
The Argentine’s trip to the Middle East did not go well with Paris Saint-Germain, who punished him with a two-week ban. The striker is not allowed to train with the team and will also not be paid for the duration of the suspension.
Meanwhile, fans expressed their anger towards Messi by hurling offensive chants against him in front of the club’s headquarters on Wednesday (May 3). Despite the measures being condemned by the Ligue 1 giants, the 2022 World Cup is certain to leave Paris when his contract expires in the summer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Vidal has now criticized PSG fans for their treatment of Messi in recent days. The former Barcelona midfielder believes the Argentine has been the best player in Paris this season and feels he should be cherished rather than abused.
“The thing about PSG fans being crazy, these people are getting crazier every day,” said Vidal (via TyC Sports). “They can’t insult the best in the world, watching him (Lionel Messi) play… They obviously haven’t been in the Champions League and the (French) Cup, but in the Championship, he was the best.
“Champion of the world, he’s in almost all matches; he’s never injured; he scores most goals with Mbappe, most assists from him. Crazy, crazy they always attack the best, but that’s football, that’s the way people are.”
Meanwhile, Messi issued an apology for traveling to Saudi Arabia without permission, in a video on Friday (May 5).
Arturo Vidal addresses the future of Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi amid Barcelona links
Lionel Messi will not be short of options when he leaves the Parc des Princes this summer. The government of Saudi Arabia is ready to offer the megastar 400 million euros annually to persuade him to move to the Middle East.
Major League Soccer club Inter Miami has also been recognized as interested in Paris Saint-Germain. Meanwhile, Barcelona are keen to re-sign Lionel Messi after he reluctantly left him in 2021. Speaking of the forward’s future, Vidal said:
“I always wish the best for Leo. He will know what is the best decision for him and his family. I will support him in whatever he wants, but I don’t like speaking for others.”
Vidal played 81 matches alongside Messi during his time in Barcelona between 2018 and 2020, scoring ten times. They’ve won two cups together, including one La Liga title
