Manisha Koirala He defines success as “the luxury of saying no”, which the actress says she has achieved over the years with the films 1942: A Love Story, Bombay & Co. proved to be turning points in her career.
Now, nearly two decades later, Koirala said she hopes Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming “Heramandi” series will feature as another mentor for her.
“What I call success is the freedom to do what I want to do and at any time. I feel so successful today because I have the luxury to say no… the eternal love of this profession keeps me going. I love the field of acting and cinema,” the actor told PTI in an interview here.
Koirala said the idea of success in the 1990s was full of timeline.
“Earlier when I started my career it was about filling out your appointment notes. I was told if the actors are busy for the next three years, they happen and rock the actors, so my focus was on that.” After 32 years in the entertainment business, her focus has shifted.
She added, “I’d rather spend a lot of free time, where I can travel, do gardening, trekking, write a book, watch concerts, spend time with family…doing things that interest me rather than doing mediocre projects.”
The 52-year-old actress reunites with Kamushi: Music director Sanjay Leela Bhansali in Heeramandi on Netflix, which marks the director’s entry into digital media.
“The turning points for me were Saudagar, 1942: A Love Story, Bombay and after a long gap I worked with her as a company. Now, I feel Hermandi could be the turning point for me. I am keeping my fingers crossed,” she added.
Describing Bhansali as a “maestro”, Koirala said it was a pleasure to work with the director after more than 25 years.
“Sanjay is someone I worked with on Khamoshi and there was a long gap but we stayed in touch. We have a deep bond of friendship that is not limited to work. I have a deep rooted respect for him because he is a filmmaker and he has improved with each film and that is because of his work ethic that no one else can.” to match it.”
The long-awaited period drama explores the cultural reality of Hiramandi, a dazzling region, through the stories of courtesans and their patrons set against the turbulent backdrop of the Indian freedom struggle of the 1940s.
The group also includes Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal, and Sanjeeda Sheikh.
Manisha Koirala said she was thrilled when the director of Gangubai Kathiawadi gave her the offer. “He’s such a simple guy. He’s so grounded. It’s a pleasure to work with him.”
The actor said that Bhansali is one of those few directors whose stories featuring women hit the main box office.

“Being an actress, we have always been okay in a way with getting runner-up to male actors. It’s a male-dominated industry… There are very few filmmakers like Sanjay, where women act as heroines and they are huge box-office hits.”
Koirala, who has starred in films such as Lust Stories, Sanju and Shehzada in the past five years, said she is “eager” to develop a new fan base and reconnect with her fans.
She said, “I am very anxious to have the love and affection of new audiences as well as to preserve the memory of my fans, who have watched my previous work for 20 or 30 years… They inspire me to do better”. .
