Former India captain Sachin Tendulkar was disappointed with India’s loss against Australia by 209 runs in the final of the ICC World Test Championship at The Oval in London on Sunday 11 June.
Tendulkar said the research team that left Ravichandran Ashwin surprised him the most. The 50-year-old noted that the non-spinner would have come in handy since the Australian has played five quality lefties.
Interestingly, left-handers Travis Head (163) and Alex Carey (66*) were Australia’s top one-off Test scorers.
Tendulkar tweeted:
“I didn’t understand the exclusion of @ashwinravi99 from the playing XI, who is currently the number one bowler in the world. As I mentioned before the game, skillful spinners don’t always rely on turn paths, they use drift in the air and bounce off the surface to mask their differences.”
The legendary mixture continued
“Don’t forget, Australia had 5 left-handed players out of the top 8.”
Ashwin is the first cricketer to dismiss more than 200 left fielders in Test cricket. The 36-year-old was the joint bowler of the series in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Cup, taking 25 wickets in the four Test series. In England, he picked 18 wickets in seven Tests.
An all-rounder is equally useful as a low-profile five-ton batter in Test cricket. Thus, the decision raised several eyebrows.
On the decision to drop Ashwin from the squad, India captain Rohit Sharma said before the draw:
“The weather conditions are cloudy. The pitch won’t change much. It’s always difficult (Tark Ashwin), he was the winner of the match.”

Sachin Tendulkar added that India also failed to score well in their first innings, which was one of the reasons behind their loss. He wrote on Twitter:
“India had to bat hard in the first innings to stay in the game, but they couldn’t.”
After Australia scored 469 in the first innings, India replied with 296, courtesy of Ajinkya Rahane’s 89. This took the Australians to a first innings lead of 173 runs.
In spite of this, Rohit Sharma and Co. recovered to reduce the Australians to 170/8 in their second innings. However, Australia extended their lead to 444 to take a slight lead in the contest. India’s team eventually compiled for 234, which saw them lose back-to-back WTC finals.
