According to local residents, at around 7 am on Wednesday, the middle section of the bridge connecting Mayapur village in Vallod taluka with Digamma village in Viara taluka in Tapi district of Mindhola river collapsed.
Even as Cyclone Biparjoy looks set to make landfall off the coast of Gujarat in a few hours, there was a storm on social media in the state after the collapse of a newly constructed bridge on the Mindhola River at Valod Taluka in Tapi district on Wednesday morning. The bridge has not yet opened.
On Wednesday evening, according to a government statement, Prime Minister Bhupendra Patil took serious note of the incident and ordered the immediate suspension of the work of the Executive Engineer, Deputy Engineer and Assistant Engineer.
“The apparent investigation indicates that low quality materials were used in the construction of the bridge and thus CM Bhupendra Patel has decided to crack down on the officers involved and suspend three officials,” the government statement said. The Akshay Construction Company (Surat) has been involved in the construction of the bridge and has started the process of recovering the amount from the agency.”

In October 2022, a pedestrian suspension bridge over the Machu River in Morbi town of Gujarat collapsed, killing more than 135 people.
