The Uttar Pradesh government has included two more members in the three-member judicial panel to investigate the killing of gangster politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in Prayagraj last month.

The two new members are former Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court Dilip Babasaheb Bhosal and Jharkhand Justice Virender Singh, a government official said.

Earlier, the state government formed a three-member judicial committee headed by (retired) Judge Arvind Kumar Tripathi to investigate the killing of Ateeq and Ashraf. Its members include former DGP Subish Kumar Singh and former district judge Brijesh Kumar Soni.

On Friday, the five-member judicial committee visited the government hospital where the accident occurred.

Notably, Ateeq and Ashraf, who were being held in remand in connection with the killings of Umesh Pal and two police gunners, were shot dead by three attackers at a government hospital in Prayagraj on 15 April. The police took Ateeq and Ashraf to the hospital. for medical examination.

The three alleged attackers are Lavlesh Tiwari (22), Mohit aka Sunny Purani (23) and Arun Kumar Maurya (18).

On April 28, the Supreme Court directed the UP government to file a status report on the steps taken after the incident. “A comprehensive affidavit will be provided indicating the steps taken to investigate the deaths that occurred on 15th April near Moti Lal Nehru Hospital, Prayagraj. The Supreme Court, which was hearing a petition from lawyer Vishal Tiwari, who is seeking an independent investigation into the killing of Ateeq and his brother Ashraf, also asked the UPU government how the killers knew they had been taken to hospital.

“How did they know? We saw it on TV. Why weren’t they taken to the ambulance right from the hospital entrance gate? Why were they paraded?” asked the panel of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Dipankar Datta Chief Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who appeared in the UP government.
