Pokemon GO wouldn’t be the same game without its opponents in Team GO Rocket. Led by the evil boss Giovanni, the trainers will have to defeat a lot of minions before it’s time to take on the leader himself. However, once players do this, they will notice that, like other Rockets, Giovanni’s team rarely stays put for long.
As of the Team GO Rocket Takeover event in March 2023, Giovanni’s lineup of Shadow Pokemon has changed again. If the trainers fought Giovanni from then on, they might know what to expect from him. However, some players may not know what the villain’s battle party is carrying.
With that being the case, it’s not a bad time to take a look at how Giovanni’s current lineup is facing off in Pokemon GO.

All players need to know how to counter Giovanni’s current team in Pokemon GO as of May 2023
As some Pokemon GO players are well aware, Giovanni doesn’t have a whole lot of Shadow Pocket Monsters to use compared to his collaborators. Since only three Pokémon can be used at one time in battle, he only has five total options for joining his team, and two creatures are guaranteed to appear in each lineup.
Trainers should always expect to see Persian Giovanni as well as a Legendary Pokemon that rotates through its lineup every few months. Currently, the GO Team Chief uses Rocket Regice as a Shadow Legendary.
Team Giovanni and his chances of appearing in Pokemon GO
- single slot – Persian (100%)
- second slot – Nidoking (44%), Kingler (33%), Kingdra (23%)
- The third slot – Royal (100%)
The good news is that since Regice and Persian are guaranteed to appear in this Pokemon GO battle, trainers can easily take on them. However, Giovanni’s choice of Nidoking, Kingdra, or Kingler will complicate things a bit.
Obviously, Trainers can always enter and then exit a battle after seeing the Pokémon Giovanni that he uses in the second slot. This would help them decide which counter to use. The most obvious choice players should make in this battle is a strong Fight-type Pokemon, as they are able to take on both Persian and Regice.
Here is our recommended Pokemon GO team to beat Giovanni in May 2023:
- single slot – Blaziken, Lucario, Keldeo, Chesnaught, or Conkeldurr
- second slot – Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, Gardevoir, Zekrom, Reshiram or Palkia
- The third slot – Groudon, Darmanitan, Gallade, Machamp, or Metagross
With the above recommended options, Trainers should have a very balanced team when it comes to facing Giovanni in matches in Pokemon GO.
Persian and Regice can easily be countered with fighting type options. However, there are also Fire and Steel-type selections, such as Reshiram, Blaziken, Darmanitan, and Metagross, that can also counter Regice.
Several dragon-type creatures that can take on Kingdra are listed. A few of Alola’s Guardian Gods, such as Tapu Bulu and Tapu Lele, can also manipulate Kingdra, thanks to their partial fairy writing.
Since Nidoking is weak for both psycho and water movements, trainers can choose picks like Keldeo, Palkia, and Gallade/Gardevoir, who can manage them well in most situations. Gardevoir’s partially fictional writing also gives her some play against Kingdra.
As a partially poisonous-type creature, the Nidoking is also vulnerable to Earth-type attacks. This also makes Groudon a great pick because it can also deal fire damage to beat Regice.
This leaves only Kingler, which can easily be dispatched by a Grass-type creature like Chesnaught or Tapu Bulu. Electric picks like Zekrom should be able to handle the job, too.
