A man was arrested on board an Air Chandigarh Indigo flight at Dabolim Airport after he tried to open the emergency door of the plane on Thursday. Police said the flyer tampered with the wing cover and pulled the door control knob, after which all passengers were forced off the plane.

Airline officials notified security agencies at the airport and the 28-year-old was handed over to the police, who identified him as Vishal Chandel, a citizen of Himachal Pradesh.

“After taking the seat, (he) negligently pulled the wing cover flap, messed around and also pulled the control handle slightly from the emergency door. Because of this negligence, he endangered the lives or personal safety of the passengers and crew members on board and also, the aircraft became unserviceable resulting in Disembarking 179 passengers,” according to a complaint filed with the police.

The accident occurred on Thursday evening. The accused was a passenger on IndiGo Flight 6E-724 from Goa to Chandigarh. The plane was near the Bay Area at the time and had not yet taken off. The cause of the accident has not been confirmed. A police officer said, “A notice under section of the Code of Criminal Procedure, Section 41, has been sent to the accused.”

The FIR was registered against Vishal Chandel under Section 336 (An act endangering life/personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code.

Sources said the flight was canceled and the airline gave passengers options to either take an alternative flight or get a refund. The airline could not be reached for comment.
