Four people were shot dead in Churachandpur of Manipur when the security forces were evacuating Metis in the area. Mawan Hansingh, 24, a researcher and resident of Churachandpur, told the Indian Express that the unrest in the city started around 7pm on Friday. “Because of the deployment of security personnel, people are not moving from their homes. At around 7 pm, we got information that the security personnel stranded in the city will be evacuated from Mitai. To fortify them, we put the women at the front of the checkpoint because we thought they would not be shot, but the security forces opened fire and killed four people.

The Assam Rifles official in Imphal said he had received information that a gathering of “80-200” people had taken place and four people had died in the shooting. “The evacuation of people from different parts of the state is constantly going on,” he said, adding that road closures are still widespread in different parts of the state.

A senior official from the Central Security Forces confirmed that four people were killed, while a senior police official from the region put the number at three.

Meanwhile, the DIG (ops) of CRPF wrote in an internal communication to his force: “With regard to ensuring the safety of CRPF personnel on leave, during the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur, the relevant authority has requested all unit offices/institutions to immediately contact their employees coming from Manipur, who are now on leave.In case they feel unsafe/unsafe, they are instructed to report immediately at the nearest CRPF,BSF and SF location, along with their family members.Please ensure that all possible assistance is given to such individuals on a priority basis.

It comes a day after a Central Reserve Police officer named Choncullin Huckip, who was on leave, was shot dead when he tried to stop men from setting fire to a village.
