Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has admitted he is unsure if Darwin Nunez will be able to live up to fans’ expectations and emerge as a prolific goalscorer.

Liverpool signed Nunez for a staggering €80m from Benfica last summer. Since then, the Uruguayan forward has made 42 appearances for the Anfield side in all competitions, scoring 15 goals and providing four assists.

Fowler, who has scored 183 goals in 369 appearances for the Reds across competitions, has criticized Nunez for his lack of efficiency. The cult champion believes Nunez has the ability to create chances and score goals but is unsure if he will be able to become an elite striker.

Speaking to Premier League Productions, the former England international said:

“So far he’s (very extravagant). I said before the show, he’s going to be a player.

“He’ll be a handful and he’ll take chances. He’ll score goals. But for the level, Liverpool fans think he’ll score goals? I’m not sure we’ll see that.”

Nunez, 23, has scored nine goals in 29 Premier League games this season, missing 20 big chances so far. Only the league’s top scorer (35 goals), Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, has missed more chances (26) than him.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright backs Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez to come through well in 2023-24 season

Former Arsenal star Ian Wright believes Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez will turn his fortunes around in the 2023-24 season. Wright has identified the number of scoring chances Nunez has had and feels he’ll start to turn them around as he becomes more aggressive next season.

When asked if Nunez would have a better second season at Anfield, Wright told BBC One: Match of the day program:

“Absolutely, especially when you see the opportunities he gets, the opportunities he misses.

“Next season he’ll freshen himself up, get more intense about his goal-scoring, and then he’ll finish it off. I’m not worried about him.”

Núñez has not found the net since scoring in a 6-1 win over Leeds United on 18 April. His poor goalscoring record has prevented him from becoming a mainstay in Jurgen Klopp’s squad, starting just 19 of his 29 Premier League matches this season.
