SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) batting coach Hemang Badani commented that he found Rajasthan Royals (RR) decision to give 19th over to Kuldip Yadav in the IPL 2023 match on Sunday (8 May) somewhat surprising. According to Badani, if he had been in the Rajasthan camp, he would have preferred the more experienced Obed Makoi.

With SRH needing 41 runs off 12 balls, Rajasthan captain Sanju Samson decided to give his penultimate over to the inexperienced Kuldip. The 26-year-old was beaten three sixes and four by Glenn Phillips (25 of 7). Abdul Samad (17* from seven) then hit two from six in the last over to lift Hyderabad to an unlikely victory.

Speaking at a post-match press conference, Padani expressed his surprise at RR’s tactics. He said:

“If I had to bring in an impact bowler (McCoy), I might have brought him into the game a little earlier. They bowled one and then they went to Kuldip. Perhaps, you’d rather go for an experienced bowler. Kuldip is still learning his traits, but McCoy has been around for a little while.”

“I found it a little surprising that they went towards Kuldip and not towards McCoy.”

The former India batsman confirmed that the SRH were confident of chasing down 215, given the nature of the surface. Regarding what was said in the camp during the strategic deadline, he said:

“The talk was that this surface is a good surface. (Ravichandran) Ashwin had finished fourth by the 14th. We just felt with a couple of (Yuzvendra) Chahal we had to make sure we didn’t lose too much.

“We fancied our chances because we knew Sandeep (Sharma) had a chance, Kuldip had to go down. They brought Obed in later. We felt this was a deck where middle picks could be removed.”

McCoy was brought in as the sub-impact by RR but ended up bowling only once as he gave up 13 runs.

“It’s a great win for us because it gives us momentum” – SRH Striking Coach

Reflecting on the win, Padani said the result would give them momentum after they had lost in a few close matches earlier.

The 46-year-old said:

“It’s a great win for us because it gives us momentum. Some matches could have been a lot different for us, especially the last game against KKR we needed 9 in the end. We couldn’t finish that. We also should have finished the match against Delhi on our land.

“We were actually on the other extreme in terms of finishing matches, but obviously that will give us confidence.”
