The Ministry of Health bulletin said that with one death – recorded in Mumbai – the statewide death toll rose to 1,48,538.

Maharashtra on Monday reported 76 new COVID-19 cases, down from nearly 180 infections recorded a day earlier, bringing the total number to 8,167,595, while another patient died of the viral disease, the state health ministry said.

The Ministry of Health bulletin said that with one death – recorded in Mumbai – the statewide death toll rose to 1,48,538.

According to the bulletin, 2,515 coronavirus tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative number in the state to 8,70,50,247.

The Mumbai Administrative Division reported the highest 57 cases followed by 11 in Pune district, five in Kolhapur and one in Akola, Latoor and Kolhapur districts.

The administrative district consists of several regions.

According to the bulletin, the city of Mumbai recorded 28 cases and one death related to the infection, bringing the total number to 11,62,373 and the tally to 19,768.

The department said the number of COVID-19 recoveries rose to 8,017,530 after 176 patients recovered from the respiratory disease in the past 24 hours, leaving the state with an active case count of 1,628.

Since January 1, 2023, as many as 108 COVID-19-related deaths have been recorded in the state and 74.09 percent of those deaths have occurred in individuals over the age of 60. The bulletin also mentioned that 85% of the deceased had comorbidities (suffering from more than one disease at a time).

The department said Maharashtra recorded 1,527 cases between May 2 and May 8 compared to 3,948 in the previous week (April 25 – May 1), reflecting a sharp drop in detection of new patients and showing that the recent spike in infections is fading.

The coronavirus recovery rate in Maharashtra is 98.16%, while the death rate is 1.81%.

Right now, Omicron XBB.1.16 is the dominant variant for COVID-19 in the state, a health department official said.

He said that a total of 1,241 patients have been found infected with this type, and it has caused 12 deaths so far.
