In a gruesome incident, a Delhi woman beat her 86-year-old mother-in-law to death with a frying pan in Neb Sarai district of South Delhi, police said. The accident occurred on April 28. Hassi Soum’s son, 51-year-old Surjit, said that his mother had been suffering from arthritis for a long time and had problems walking. Surjit Som, his wife Sarmishta Som, 48, and their 16-year-old daughter have lived with Hassi Som at the Swastik Residency in Neb Sarai since 2014. Surjit brought his mother Hassi Som, who was living alone in Kolkata until March 2022, to Delhi and rented her an apartment. in front of his house.

The police found and confiscated a security camera in the bedroom. However, the camera did not have any storage device. Surjit told the police that he was observing his mother’s daily routine via a live feed from the camera on his phone and that the camera was not working on the day of the accident due to a power outage.

No foul play was suspected in Hassi Somme’s death until an autopsy was performed at the AIIMS morgue on 29 April. After the autopsy, the doctor said that such injuries are not consistent with a normal fall and a detailed investigation should take place, the news agency said PTI Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chandan Chaudhary was quoted as saying. Police said that according to the autopsy report, 14 injuries were found all over the body.

Surjit and his daughter asserted that the relationship between Sarmeshta and Hassi sum was not cordial. Only Sarmishta was present in the apartment on the day of the accident. Surjit later admitted that he had removed the memory card of the CCTV camera before calling the police, the DCP said.

CCTV footage revealed that at around 10:30 a.m. on April 28, Sarmeshta entered her mother-in-law’s apartment with a frying pan and hit her several times. Chowdhury added that the cries of the elderly woman can be heard on the surveillance cameras.

Based on the content of the investigation, Surjeet’s testimony, CCTV footage and post-mortem report, a case was registered under IPC section 302 and Sarmishta was arrested.
