London: The UK government has ordered China to close unofficial police stations operating on British soil, Security Minister Tom Tugendhat in front of Parliament on Tuesday.
the External Office “He informed the Chinese Embassy that any posts relating to such ‘police service stations’ in the UK are unacceptable and should not be employed in any way,” a written statement said.
She added that the embassy “replied that all these stations were closed permanently.”
British police launched investigations after the human rights group Preventive measures advocates Tugendhat said of their presence in the UK.
According to the group, it was officially set up to provide administrative services, but it has also been used to “surveillance and harass diaspora communities and, in some cases, to coerce people back to China outside of legal channels,” he added.
Tugendhat said police visited every site identified by Safeguard Defenders “and have not, to date, identified any evidence of illegal activity on behalf of the Chinese state via these sites.”
“We appreciate that public censorship and police have had a repressive effect on any administrative functions these sites may have,” he added.
“However, these ‘police service centers’ were set up without our permission and with our presence,” Tugendhat said.
In April, The Times reported that Chinese businessman Lin Ruyu ran a food delivery business in the London suburb of Croydon that doubled as an unauthorized Chinese police station.
Beijing’s embassy in London denied the news and warned against “false accusations” reported by the media.
