A 40-foot-tall statue depicting an Indian hockey player erected in Rourkela town in Odisha’s Sundargarh district ahead of this year’s Men’s Hockey World Cup collapsed due to a thunderstorm on Sunday, officials said.

The iron statue was installed near the Rourkela Airport adjacent to the Besra Munda International Hockey Stadium in January ahead of the FIFA Men’s World Cup Odisha 2023.

They said the two legs of the statue were smashed by the strong winds and fell to the sides.

The statue was built by a Bhubaneswar-based company at a cost of ₹30.68 lakh.

Prime Minister Naveen Patnaik unveiled the statue ahead of the World Cup.

Subhankar Mohapatra, commissioner of the Rourkela Municipal Corporation, said a committee has been set up to look into the reasons for the collapse of the statue, which was erected just five months ago.
