A day after the body of a 19-year-old woman, earlier presumed missing, was recovered from a lake in Vikarabad district, about 100 km from Hyderabad, police now believe she may have committed suicide.

It was initially suspected that she had been murdered elsewhere and dumped in the lake on the outskirts of Barigi village and questions were raised whether she had also been sexually assaulted.

The deceased, Sirisha, a nursing student from Kandalapur, left her home after a heated argument with family members on Saturday night, and her body bore several bruises when it recovered on Sunday afternoon.

According to the police, there are multiple bruises on her legs and hands. The cause of death is unknown. Along with the other injuries, there is a half inch deep wound next to the nose and also under the lips. We cannot confirm or deny sexual assault until an autopsy report is available. The samples have been sent for forensic analysis,” Vitthal Reddy, Sub-Inspector, Pariji, told Indianexpress.com.

Police said they are questioning her father, brother, and brother-in-law.

Police said the woman left the house after her father-in-law beat her. Although she left the house at night, the family only realized she was missing the next morning. Her body was found on Sunday afternoon after a few villagers alerted the local authorities.

She has not gone to college for the last two months since her mother suffered a heart attack and is undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Hyderabad. On Saturday evening, an argument broke out in their home after her mobile phone was confiscated by her sister’s husband who suspected her of having an affair. She was reprimanded and threatened by her family members which resulted in physical assault on her.

According to Venkata Ramaiah, the circuit inspector, the case of suspicious death is under investigation, and sections of abetment to suicide will be filed against the deceased’s father and brother-in-law.

As per the preliminary investigation, it is not a murder case. The injuries came as a result of Anil’s assault on her father and sister-in-law. The girl went to the lake by herself and we have eyewitnesses who saw her go there alone at night. We are investigating all angles,” Ramaiah told Indianexpress.com.

He also denied reports that the victim’s eyes had been gouged out and her body wounded with a knife.
