Actor Arshad Warsi recalled working on the blockbuster film Munna Bhai MBBSHe said he was certain at the time that it would be the last film of his career. Arshad played the role of the ring Munna Bhai in the film, and appeared as the breakout character. His career after that not only continued, but also flourished.
But before he signed, he was sure that it would be the death knell of his career. He described his role as “bad”.In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, he revealed that Makarand Deshpande had turned him down. He said he made the film because he liked director Rajkumar Hirani as a person and as a filmmaker.
He said, “I knew Yeh film karne ke baad, meri zindagi barbaad hai (I thought my career was going to end because of this movie.) Mujhe laga hogaya, this is the last movie I’m going to do. It was an idiot’s turn. Forget it, Makarand Deshpande said no to the film. He didn’t want to do that, it was that bad.”
He continued, “When you agree to a role, you only see what is on paper. It is only after the film is shown when you realize what it is, what effect it has. It was the role of the idiot, who was among five other fools who accompanied the hero. I thought it would be the last.” A movie in my career…even if the movie is a hit, I get nothing, if it fails, I get nothing… I don’t think even Sanju had much faith in the first movie, it was against what he was working on at the time.. .”
Arshad added, “I loved Raju. He was a good guy and a good director and I loved the story. I loved the movie. But I knew I wasn’t going to get anything out of it. Do you remember the fools in movies like this? Only the hero and the director benefit from these movies. I asked Raju Allowing me to enjoy that, allowing me to enjoy my failure.”
Munna Bhai MBBS revived Sanjay Dutt’s career, and established Rajkumar Hirani as one of Bollywood’s biggest directors. The film spawned a sequel, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, which also emerged as a hit. Hirani later directed a biopic of Sanjay Dutt titled Sanju, and will be back with his new movie Dinky later this year.
