He said that the accused Hasnur Islam was arrested from his shop in Matia district in the afternoon.

Police said a female Bharatiya Janata Party leader was killed and her body dumped on National Highway 17 in Goalpara district of Assam on Monday.

The body of BJP Secretary Jonali Nath was found at NH 17 in Salpara district of the district on Monday morning, after which the police launched a search operation to catch the attacker, Inspector General of Police Devraj Upadiya told reporters here.

He said that the accused Hasnur Islam was arrested from his shop in Matia district in the afternoon.

The Criminal Investigation Department alleged that during interrogation, the accused said that he had had an affair with the woman earlier but had married another woman a few months earlier.

The front said that the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party confronted him and they got into a fight in the car, after which she was attacked, which led to her death.

He added that the accused then dumped her body on the National Highway and fled the scene in his car.

Police rushed to the spot and sent the dead woman’s body to Goalpara Civil Hospital for an autopsy.

The accused appeared before a court, which ordered his detention for five days.
