PV Sindhu overturned losses in her final bout against Gregoria Mariska Tunjung to hand Indonesia a 21-19, 21-15 defeat in her home event at the Indonesia Open World Tour Super 1000. Where she remained solid and offensive, she won in 38 minutes.

Tunjung had earlier defeated Sindh in the Spanish Masters and last month in the semi-finals of the Malaysia Masters, using her outstanding trick skills. But the Indonesian was extremely error-prone on Tuesday from both ends of the field, even as the Indian remained steadfast and stepped up his attack after winning the opener 21-19.

Sindhu hit the shuttle early and higher too, breathing out her attacking instincts, even as Tunjung’s errors piled up, often hitting on the occasional winning bid. Trailing 10-8, Sindh went on a streak of five straight points, refusing to take control like their last two games. Although Tunjung’s shots helped her to level 14-14, Sendou expected better on the day, covering more ground in a solid defence. The Indian was leading 19-15, dodging Tunjung’s challenge for the opening bag.

In the second, Tunjung was too mired in fouls to come close to escalating the fight, and Sindhu played some sharp blows to stop any challenge the Indonesian might present. It took her head-to-head career to 8-2, but more importantly stemmed a trend of losses.

“I was more prepared than the previous two. I was more predictable in the front yard and backcourt, and I was able to cover corners better. Before, I made easy mistakes. Not anymore,” Sindhu told local media later at the Super 1000 championship.

She’ll then play Tai Tzu Ying, trying to stop her eight-game losing streak dating back to August of 2019. Sindi is 18-5 overall, but has been seeming proactive in her offense, having discarded her defensive ways, and poised for some decent results.
