The death toll from the Odisha triple train accident has risen to 289 after the death of an injured passenger at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Tuesday, an official said.

The passenger was identified as Bijay Paswan, a resident of Bihar.

He was admitted to the Cuttack facility on June 3, the day after one of the worst train disasters in the country occurred at Pahanga Bazar station in Balasore district.

Paswan was suffering from multiple injuries, one of which was a spinal cord injury. A hospital official said he was also suffering from high blood pressure.

The brother of the deceased said that Baswan’s health condition worsened on Monday night and he died on Tuesday.

The Coromandel Express crashed into a stationary goods train, derailing most of its coaches at 7 pm on 2 June. A few Coromandel buses ousted the last few Bengaluru Howrah Express buses that were passing at the same time.
