Three women died and 5 were injured after a pile of soil collapsed on them in Pataudi on Tuesday, police said, adding that they were MNREGA workers.

According to ACP Varun Dahiya, “In Dharapur, a hill collapsed on eight female workers while they were resting. Police quickly reached the site and SDM Pataudi and ACP Pataudi reached the spot during the rescue operation. They were taken to a civil hospital from where they were transferred to Gurgaon Hospital.” Three died during treatment and five are in stable condition.”

The deceased have been identified as Priyanka (30), Bellu (40), and Kamala (42).

Two of the injured have been returned home.

“It was found that under the supervision of the Sarpanch of the village, several workers were digging a pond. Based on the complaint received in connection with the incident, charges were filed against the Sarpanch of the village and the other persons under Sections 337 and 304-A.”

Priyanka’s family said the accident happened around 10 am when she was resting and suddenly soil fell on her and the others. At her home on Tuesday night, the last rites were performed.

Her brother-in-law Pawan Kumar, a rickshaw driver, said: “She was underground for about 15 minutes before the villagers could rescue her as a huge mound of soil fell on her. We cremated her body in the evening.”

Priyanka has a five-year-old son who is in school and a two-year-old daughter. Her husband is also a worker.

“The children don’t know what happened. They are crying seeing their father crying. He is in bad shape, he says he doesn’t want to live, but he has young children to take care of. His son is asking where their mother is,” Kumar added.

Police said an investigation is underway.
