A big budget does not guarantee a movie’s success. Take for example Zero by Shah Rukh Khan, Tubelight by Salman Khan, Saawariya by Ranbir Kapoor, and Brahmastra by Alia Bhatt. But one thing that really raises the earnings potential is a great story, especially if it’s on a topic close to the audience’s heart. Perhaps this is what will ensure a satisfactory start to Om Raut’s upcoming legendary drama, Adipurush, at the box office. Made on a budget of Rs 500 crore, trade experts believe audiences will see the film primarily because it is a retelling of the Hindu epic Ramayan.

Adipurush, which hits theaters on June 16, stars Telugu star Prabhas as King Raghava who fights the evil Ravana (played by Saif Ali Khan) with the help of the Vanara army to bring back his wife Janaki (played by Kriti Sanon) from Lanka.

Film trade guru Taran Adarsh says he will watch the film mainly because of his fascination with Ramayan, which he watched on TV as a child with his entire family. He believes, just like himself, that there will be many Indians who will watch Adipurush because of their love for Ramayan.

“For me, the most important thing isn’t Prabhas or Kriti Sanon or Saif Ali Khan. For me, it’s Ramayan, which is a very strong emotion. Everything else is secondary,” he says, while agreeing that many Indians who watch the film will resonate with him. his feelings.

Advance booking for Adipurush on Sunday opened. Since then, there have been reports of Pathaan’s pre-release booking record being broken. However, Taran refuted such reports and said although the film has sold a large number of tickets, it is not on par with Shah Rukh Khan Pathan. “It is not known yet the organic number of tickets sold. At the moment, it looks like he will be off to a good start,” he told Indianexpress.com.

However, the bulk of the movie tickets have already been bought by celebrities. Ranbir Kapoor, The Kashmir Files producer Abhishek Agarwal and Ananya Birla bought 10,000 tickets for distribution to the underprivileged in society. Other celebrities are following suit.

Adarsh says the generation that watched Ramayan’s Ramayan’s Ramanand Sagar on TV will watch Adipurush for the nostalgia factor. Film producer and business analyst Girish Johar believes that many parents will take their children to film to educate them about Hindu mythology.

Johar suggests that “People will take their children for the movie because in a long time, nothing came out based on Ramayan. Earlier, we lived in a joint family, where the grandparents told this story. But now everyone is in a nuclear family, and every parent understands the importance of telling the story.” So, they may go not only to entertain, but also to inculcate mythological values in their children. Unless it’s too bad, people will watch the movie. It’s a larger-than-life extravaganza and it tells the epic tale that every Indian family knows. So, I’m sure that Parents will take their children at least once and this will give a huge boost to the movie.”

According to Johar, Adipurush will debut with around ₹50 crore at the box office across all languages. “It’s a true pan-Indian film where the directors and producers are from the north, but they’ve taken a big southern star in the lead role. Prabhas has a huge fan following, and I’m pegging the Hindi version of the film for an opening anywhere around Rs 15-18 crore. The film will be among the best. Ten opening films ever in all languages. Rs 50 cr plus can definitely touch in all languages”, he predicts.

The PVR national cinema chain has already sold more than one lakh tickets, of which 25 per cent were sold in southern states. “We have received an overwhelming response on pre-bookings for Adipurush which will be released in 5 languages - Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. We have already passed more than 1 lakh bookings of which more than 25% are from southern states excluding certain regions.”

As Johar mentioned, Prabhas, without a doubt, has a huge fan following. But the poor performance of his last two films at the box office put his options under the scanner. 2022 release, Radhe Shyam has made a business worth Rs 19.30 crore. Saaho (2019) also failed to do magic at the ticket counters as it earned ₹142.95 crore. It was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 350 crore. Therefore, it is important for him that Adipurush gets a good turnout in the theatres.

“It’s very important for Prabha that Adipurush works because Saaho didn’t really do well. Although she did well in the Indian ring, she didn’t push him into that area. Secondly, Radha Shyam was a complete disaster. Particularly, when she touches Heights with Baahubali and Baahubali 2, you have to… I’m not saying every movie has to be this way. Sachin Tendulkar doesn’t have to hit six on every ball. He needs a big hit and when your movie has a budget of 500 crore, Then you need to deliver strong numbers,” says Taran Adarsh.

Girish Johar agrees that Prabha “still has to cut through the ice in the Indian belt” but also believes that through the figure of Lord Ram, he will be able to reach the remote regions of northern India. “The character he plays is going to help him break into the Indian Belt,” he says, but he never fails to mention that if that breakthrough doesn’t happen, “then he definitely has to think twice.”

Adipurush recovered some of the cost of making it from distribution rights, OTT, and satellite rights. According to business analyst Ramesh Bala, the manufacturers have already secured Rs 270 crore in distribution rights. As per the report, the film and satellite rights of the film were sold for Rs 210 crore. Now, it remains to be seen how much it will earn from ticket sales.
