The kidneys were sent to patients at Global Hospital in Parel and Jaslok Hospital in Pedder Street, the heart was sent to Chennai while the liver was donated to a patient registered at Power Hiranandani Hospital.

Officials from the Organ Transplant Coordination Center (ZTCC), which distributes organs from brainstem deaths between hospitals, said the three-year-old boy was among the youngest donors in Mumbai.

Kerala leads in organ donation, Delhi and Maharashtra next

Kerala is the first state with the highest number of people who have pledged to donate organs upon their death. According to government data, about 1.30 thousand people have pledged to donate organs in Kerala, while in Delhi, about 58,000 pledges have been registered. Maharashtra ranks third with just over 49,000 pledges.

India has one of the lowest rates of organ donation per million population. Sunyana Singh, CEO at NGO ORGAN India, told News18.com: “The population is around 0.4 per million, while the rate is over 40-45 per million in many countries around the world, including Spain. the United States and Croatia.

Singh said that India did not record the donations made by more than 1,000 people each year, but the year 2023 looks promising.

“Post-Covid fundraising. This year, we may break 1,000 donors a year. The government and private sector are working with NGOs to make it happen.”

Bihar reached 5,629 pledges, while Chandigarh recorded 6,186 pledges and Haryana recorded 18,522.
