In Diablo 4, surviving waves of enemies requires you to do more than just massive damage. It becomes necessary for you to improve your equipment to survive longer. This calls for an understanding of defensive stat mechanics such as shield and resistance. Armor protects against physical damage, while Resistance defends against elemental damage. It is always important to remember that stacking too many stats will not always lead to a desirable outcome.

Diablo 4 uses a tricky diminishing return formula to prevent players from becoming unkillable at the end of the game. As a result, you have to carefully consider your gear choices to ensure an effective balance between shields and resistances.

This guide will focus specifically on the mechanics of resistance to the elements and provide insights into how they work in Diablo 4.

What is the best way to use Elemental Resistance in Diablo 4?

There is no doubt that Elemental Resistance is a crucial defensive element in the game. However, its stacking mechanism can be confusing at first. Moreover, according to the in-game tooltips, Armor also reduces the damage of incoming items by half from the physical damage reduction value. This means that an overall physical protection value of 50% will defend against incoming element attacks by 25%.

Furthermore, resistance is not additive, which means you cannot equip two items with the same resistance value to get a cumulative stat increase. Instead, the diminishing game formula ensures that no player is overwhelmed during the late game phase. Alternatively, the increase in resistance may only be about 2-3%.

Therefore, you should consider your current value to improve the resistance. If it is really high and close to the 40% mark, then piling on the extra resistance won’t help at all. In such cases, it is advised to focus on other defensive stats, such as Armor and Life.

If the resistance value is too low, particularly on the hard Torment difficulty, additional item resistance stats on items can provide valuable protection.

It’s okay to focus more on dealing high damage but neglecting elemental resistance can be detrimental when facing a massive opponent. At the end of the day, it’s about optimizing your gear options and finding the right balance between the different defensive and elemental stats.
