An officer at Pattamundai Police Station, where the incident took place on Wednesday, said the boy’s half-eaten body was found by locals after an hour-long search.

On Thursday, police said a 10-year-old boy was killed by a crocodile in Odisha’s Kendrapara district. The crocodile pounced on Ashutosh Acharya, a fifth-grade student, when he was bathing in the Brahmani River in the village of Nimapur, which lies on the outskirts of Petarkanika National Park, they said.

An officer at Pattamundai Police Station, where the incident took place on Wednesday, said the boy’s half-eaten body was found by local residents after an hour-long search.

The Rajnagar Mangrove (Wildlife) Department officials said that the saltwater crocodile nesting season is in full swing right now, and they turn violent if they fear any intrusion into their housing during this time.

They said that the family of the deceased would be given 6 lakh rupees as an endowment. They added that Bhitarkanika National Park and the neighboring Mahanadi Delta region are home to 1,793 saltwater crocodiles.
