The Karnataka state cabinet on Thursday approved the revision of Kannada and social science textbooks for grade 6-10 in the state, for the current academic year by removing chapters on RSS founder Keshav Paliram Hedgewar and Hindutva theorist V. D. Savarkar among others.

It also agreed to add chapters on Savitribai Phule, Nehru’s letters to Indira Gandhi and poetry on BR Ambedkar, and to do away with changes introduced by the previous BJP government.

The Congress had promised in its polling manifesto to reverse the changes made to textbooks when the BJP was in power, and had also promised to repeal the National Education Policy (NEP).

Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs HK Patil stated after the Cabinet meeting that “With regard to the revision of text books, the Cabinet discussed the proposal put forward by the Ministry, the lessons to be removed and added, and the decisions to be taken, and approved them.”

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Kumar Bangarappa said that Congress promised in the statement to review textbooks, and Prime Minister Siddaramaiah has consistently given his guidance on this matter.
