Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak about the role of the diaspora in India’s development during his address to Indian Americans here next week, according to the community leader responsible for hosting the event.

Prime Minister Modi is visiting the US from June 21-24 at the invitation of US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. They will host Modi at a state dinner on June 22. The visit also includes an address to the joint session of Congress on June 22.

It’s a sold-out event, with registration complete for all 838 seats, said Chicago-based Dr. Bharat Barai, who was at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday to give the final shape to next week’s event.

“In terms of registrations, it is closed to the host committee as well as other people. We had an extraordinary response, all by word of mouth because we only had 838 seats. So, there was no time and there was no capacity if we advertised outside,” he said. Baray told PTI.

“We used the database we had from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s previous public meetings, and even before we could contact people, they called us and everything was filled in,” he said.

Modi will address an invitation-only gathering of diaspora leaders from across the country at the Ronald Reagan Building and the International Trade Center in Washington on June 23.

The topic will be the role of the diaspora in India’s growth story. “We want to see what we as expatriates can do to help India and its people reach a new place in the world,” Parai said.

Noting that the event will have very few cultural elements, he said the organizers want to make it primarily an interaction between expatriates and the prime minister.

“Expatriates are very excited to have such a visionary and hardworking person who has propelled India to the fifth largest economy in the world. Not only that, he has raised India’s reputation.

Chicago’s Amitabh Mittal thanked US President Joe Biden for inviting Modi on an official state visit.

“He is a man of action. He has changed India. India has been waiting for someone like him to come and take over,” Mittal said.
Mittal hopes the prime minister will make a declaration on Hindu Heritage Month in October.

We’ve had his message twice already in the last two years. But since it is here on earth, I would like to mention that the month of October is celebrated as Hindu Heritage Month.

“Not only in America, but Canada, Australia, New Zealand and six other countries have joined in, and we already have 30 announcements,” Mittal said.
