MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday paid tribute to his “dear friend” Xi Jinping in a message marking the Chinese leader’s 70th birthday.
put it in He told Xi that “it is difficult to overestimate your efforts to promote the comprehensive partnership” between Russia and China, which has strengthened cooperation in recent years.
And the two leaders grew closer as Moscow, isolated in the West since the offensive in Ukraine, turned increasingly toward Beijing.
Analysts say China has the upper hand in the relationship, and its influence is growing as Moscow’s international isolation deepens.
Putin said he expected the continuation of “constructive dialogue … for the sake of the Russian and Chinese people”.
Xi secured an unprecedented third term as president by China’s parliament ratified in March.
But the start of his tenure comes as the world’s second-largest economy grapples with significant headwinds, from slowing growth and a troubled real estate sector to a declining birth rate.
Putin said the re-election “confirmed your supreme political authority and broad support for the path you have chosen.”
“Under your leadership, the People’s Republic of China has achieved impressive successes: the economy is showing steady growth, the welfare of citizens is increasing, and Beijing’s position in the world is being strengthened,” Putin said.
